There are mainly five types of exercise bikes
The first one is the upright stationary exercise bike. These as you may guess stand up and have seats and pedals not unlike those you would find on regular bicycles.
There usually aren’t a lot of added features, and an upright stationary bike will feel a lot like and provide a similar workout as a bicycle would.
Usually, these will have basic features such as the ability to track distance and adjust the resistance level. Higher end models may have additional features, such as programmed levels of varying distance and resistance. Upright stationary bikes tend to be smaller than recumbent bikes and often come at very affordable prices. This type of exercise bike is the most popular type sold for at home use.
Next is the recumbent exercise bike. This type of exercise bike will have a larger seat will provide the rider with back support. As well, the rider will be seated partly reclined and the pedals will be in front of the seat as opposed to below. Recumbent exercise bikes provide a more comfortable experience because of the added back support and general position of the rider. This type of exercise bike is ideal for people who want to engage in another activity such as reading while exercising. Recumbent bikes typically have more features than upright stationary bikes, such as screens that display heart rate, calories burnt, speed, and more.
Another type of exercise bike is called a dual action exercise bike. This type is ideal for people who wish workout their upper body more efficiently, while getting the same lower body and cardiovascular benefits that an upright stationary or recumbent exercise bike would provide. A dual action bike features handlebars that move as the rider pedals. This results in an increased aerobic workout and tones the upper body better.
Many of these type of bikes have adjustable resistance levels for the handlebars as well as the pedals. Another thing to add is dual action exercise bikes often have fans, which help to cool the user and aid in resistance. Most bikes of this type are upright bikes, although recumbent models also exist. They are not very common, and are called recumbent dual action ellipticals or seated ellipticals.
The fourth type of exercise bike is called the indoor cycle. Indoor cycles have mechanisms that are closer to the ones that real bicyles have, and generally give the rider a more intense exercise session. Typically, they are very basic in nature and do not have fancy features like distance measurements or burnt calorie counts. They are designed to provide an intense workout, and do not usually have features designed to provide comfort such as wider seats or back support. An indoor cycle is perfect for people seeking an intense workout.
Lastly, we have interactive exercise bikes. Interactive exercise bikes provide the typical workout one would expect from an exercise bike, whilst also having cool technological features such as built in entertainment systems (TV, music, computers) or computerized programs that can customize the workout for things like weight loss or endurance training.
This type of exercise bike is available in upright or recumbent models, and will also have basic features such as speed and distance measurement. An interactive exercise bike is typically the most expensive type available on the market, and will be perfect for people looking for a serious exercise machine that is both very effective and engaging, as well as luxurious.
